Welcome to the Pitfalls of PMS.
Regular Acne or Period Acne
The simplest way to determine whether you are experiencing regular acne vs period acne is to look at the timing. Period Acne occurs around the time of your period, usually beginning the week leading to the start of your cycle and clearing up when your period is over. If you are already suffering from regular acne you may notice that during your monthly cycle you’re acne worsens.
Why does Period acne happen?
Hormones ….. raging unruly Hormones, that is the reason in a nutshell. During your monthly cycle the hormones progesterone and oestrogen decrease, which causes an influx of sebum being secreted from the sebaceous glands. Sebum is an oily substance that lubricates the skin, and when there’s too much of it, it can clog pores and cause breakouts and inflammation.
Treating Period Acne
We cannot stop the root cause of Period Acne since it is a result of hormonal changes during our period. We can lessen the severity of the acne breakout by following :
Practice good skin care regime
Wash your face with a facial cleanser at least twice a day. Avoid touching your face excessively with your hands as this can introduce dirt and Bactria to your face which can lead to clogged pores.
Exercise not only helps to ease period cramps but it may also alleviate some of the symptoms of Period Acne. When you sweat your pores dilate and the sweat expels the trapped oil and dust. Be sure to wash face after a workout.
Oral contraceptives regulate hormonal fluctuations which has been proven to reduce acne breakouts.
